About the owner:
Kara Meloy has been the creative force behind Little Sun Hat since its beginning in 2013. A mother of four young children, she is inspired by vintage photography and textiles, her family, and the Cascade mountains surrounding her home. Her desire is to provide modern childhood with weather protection, style, and memorable delight.
As a young girl, learning to sew and given free reign to wander the fabric aisles, I fell in love with shapes, textures, and the ways colors are carefully considered in design. With meticulous detail, every barbie doll I owned was given a new wardrobe (with a fresh haircut!), and my siblings were lovingly made to wear my first fumbled hand-knit caps. With a little convincing they soon grew to love those hats!
I have been trained as a hairdresser, and have had the honor of being a partner of a brick and mortar shop, selling yarn and loose leaf tea, teaching knitting lessons and drinking way too much chocolate tangerine tea.
It was not long after the birth of our fourth son, that I made our very first bonnet. I explained to my husband that it was “just a little sun hat”, and soon after our business was born. I have held on to that sweet little hat and will cherish it forever, it still smells like him and reminds me of my early years as a mother.<<<
Little Sun Hats have gone through several re-designs and we have perfected the adjustable fit and reversibility that Kara desired. Kara believes in slow business building, and shares her journey on Instagram as @littlesunhat.
