“It’s easier said than done.” they say. Hard things are not normally something we get excited about. We’ve all had to encounter hard things in our lives and if you haven’t you will soon enough.
My childhood wasn’t really full of hard things. I was adopted at birth and I think I had a pretty awesome childhood. I remember only getting one spanking, I don’t remember having to do chores, I played sports and made good grades.
Hard things started to happen in High School for me. I fell in the love with the wrong guy, my dad got cancer, I met my bio mom in my neighborhood park, I left the only city I knew for college, I did not know one single person in that new city.
I didn’t know Jesus until later in High School and when I came to know him those hard things didn’t just magically disappear. In fact more hard things began to happen.
Starting college with no help financially was hard. I left what was comfortable behind in Houston. I am thankful for the people I met in college. One person I am extremely thankful for is now my husband.
Jesus asks us to do hard things because it molds us into who he has created us to be. He is constantly shaping us.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29).
I think doing those hard things makes us more like Jesus. He wants to cultivate a relationship with him. One that requires us to do things we don’t want to do sometimes.
Motherhood isn’t easy. Being a wife isn’t easy. Maintaining friendships as an adult isn’t easy. All of it takes work. Work that I am committed to doing.
Psalm 16:11 “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy”
I know I want to show my children that I can do hard things. When they see their mom do something difficult they’ll know they can too. It might require a lot of persistence and motivation but the end result will be worth it to say WE DID IT!
